Welcome to Bird Island Runde – A Unique Nature Paradise on Norway’s West Coast!
Dear travelers, welcome to Runde – the legendary bird island located like a jewel at the very edge of the open sea in Herøy municipality on the Sunnmøre coast. Here, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the dramatic mountains, you will find one of Norway’s most spectacular natural attractions. Runde is not just a destination; it is an experience that takes your breath away with its raw, untouched beauty, rich birdlife, and fascinating history. Whether you are a passionate bird enthusiast, an avid hiker, or simply seeking peace and stunning surroundings, Runde will give you memories for a lifetime.
Runde is a small island covering only about 6.2 square kilometers with around 150 permanent residents. Nevertheless, it attracts thousands of visitors every year, especially during the breeding season from February/March to August. The island is Norway’s southernmost major seabird cliff and one of the most important breeding areas for seabirds south of the Arctic Circle. More than 230 bird species have been observed here, and around 80 species breed annually. At peak times, up to 100,000–500,000 seabirds can fill the cliffs with life, sound, and color.
Practical Tips for Your Visit
Runde is easily accessible via bridges from the neighboring island of Remøya and onward to the mainland. You can reach it by car, bus, or fast ferry from the Ålesund area. The island has limited accommodation, so book in advance – whether at Runde Lighthouse, camping, or private rentals. The visitor center provides information on birdlife, weather, and tours, and often shows films about herring fishing and the island’s history.
The best time to see puffins is May to July, but the island is beautiful all year round. Be aware of the weather – it can be windy and wet, so bring sturdy footwear, a windproof jacket, and binoculars. Respect nature: Stay on the trails, do not disturb the birds, and take your litter with you.
Runde offers more than just birds. Here you can hike along dramatic cliffs, enjoy sunsets that paint the sky in shades of pink and orange, go fishing, paddle a kayak, or simply sit and listen to the waves and the cries of the birds. It is a place where you feel small in the grandeur of nature, yet part of something greater.
Welcome to Runde – where the sea meets the sky and the birds dance in the wind. Let the island fill you with peace, wonder, and new perspectives. Whether you come for a day trip or stay several nights, Runde will give you a deeper understanding of why we must protect our natural heritage. We look forward to seeing you on the bird cliffs!
